Who else has a dog that thinks the world of them? Linda has a Shih Tzu and a Maltese (see them at the top of the stairs - so cute!) but also works as a dog sitter in her home. She has this wall that is right inside the door and is the first thing visitors see and wanted something fun and inspirational for them. 

We worked though some design options for her and she settled on this great design in White. It is perfect for an entryway since it doesn't stick out so wagging tails won't knock it off the wall!

DIY Wedding Welcome Sign

Today I'm sharing the step-by-step for this gorgeous wedding sign along with the major mistake I made! Follow along so you don't make the same mistake I did! 

I've shared a couple of DIY signs, so I'm jumping right to the part with the stencil. If you need a refresher, visit my first post here and follow along until the stencil installation.

For this bride, she wanted a layered multi-colored look. So we did the first layer of the branches with a vinyl stencil and paint.

I used Valspar's Ivory Lace for the base - white was too stark for this project. I installed the first layer of vinyl and painted my background color over it. This is ESSENTIAL so the color doesn't bleed. You'll see why later.

My stencil hangs off the side a little, but that is ok since a frame will get added later.

Once the Ivory Lace was dry (in a few hours), I painted the lighter color of green we were using. This is Valspar's Ginkgo Tree that looks wonderful with our Pine vinyl.

Once that was dry, I removed the vinyl.

With the vinyl stencil you can get really awesome details. I love how these leaves turned out.

Now it is time for the text! The bride requested this in two colors. Since there was enough room between the elements, I had the stencil created as one piece so it was less things to arrange and install.

Install the stencil just like you would one for the wall and make sure to smooth it with the included installation tool.

Remove the top making layer...

 And you are ready to paint!

And then you get so excited about how it is going to turn out and you FORGET TO PAINT THE BASE LAYER LIKE YOU HAD JUST DONE! 

I'm not yelling (at you) but kicking myself. See all those little bleeds? That is exactly what the first layer being the same as the background will prevent. Such an easy step to forget with such dire consequences!

So I took my orbital sander and sanded all the paint off. And I didn't take any photos of that step because I was so mad at myself! I repainted the background, got a new decal, reinstalled, and repainted. 

This is soooo much more crisp and looks amazing. The red is Valspar's Garnet and the gray is Sherwin Williams' Network Gray. I've also added the second layer of branches here. These are vinyl and not a stencil! You can use a combination to get some great layered looks.

Add a frame and deliver your sign to one happy bride!

We also added some pinecones in Chocolate vinyl to add another layer and warm look.

This is such a great idea for any wedding and will become a family keepsake instantly!

On Trend: Modern Heirlooms

Adding a personal touch to your home is just that - personal!

A trend we see every year is taking old traditions in your family and putting a fresh twist on them! 

We worked with AmyBeth to add this super special custom touch to her home. Her Grandmother's cookie recipe is the perfect addition to her space!

AmyBeth added this to the side of the panel next to her refrigerator. A perfect spot for a decal! It's one of those spaces that you don't normally want to add a nail to hang anything but it such a lovely blank slate waiting for some fun!

I was so inspired by AmyBeth's space, I just had to do this with one of my families recipes too! Here is my version:

I put mine on a wall that has a pocket door behind it - another perfect place for a decal! This is a recipe that my grandmother used to make all the time and has become a staple at any family gathering.

Then I shared it with my mom who of course wanted one for herself! She doesn't have the wall space in her home for a decal of this size, so I made this design into an Art Print as well!

We just love a great quote (I mean it's kind of what we do) in a great space - and Kimberly's is amazing! I mean the light fixture on the wood base and those chairs and the sconces - I could go on. But, the custom decal we worked on just for her is a perfect centerpiece to it all!

The Evolution of a Custom Designed Quote

Do you wonder what the process of working with our Design Team will be like? Only wonderful! 

Here is an example of a customer's process with our Team to get the perfect quote for her entryway (edited for length).

Customer:

I have a space that is about 48" wide that I would like to put this quote: "I invite you to not only love each other more, but love each other better." I'd like a combination of script and basic fonts.

Design Team:

This is an awesome quote! Here is a proof with some design options. They should all fit in your space wonderfully. Let me know what you think and we can go from there.

Customer:

Option 3 is my favorite, but let's try a few different options for the small text? Whimsical/handwritten style, but not script at all.

Design Team:

Got it! That is a great font isn't it? I've attached a new proof with some additional options for the non-script text that I think coordinate nicely.

Customer:

Options 3b and 3c are my favorite.  Let's add "to" at the end of the phrase and then add the citation at the bottom right as well.  Bonnie D Parkin. Same font as first line, but smaller? Not sure if that should be centered like the rest?

Design Team:

Centered, and off centered both have good qualities. That is going to be a personal preference. I've attached a new proof with both of those options. Let me know which you gravitate towards.

Customer: 

Option 3e is my favorite.  But the text should be "love each other more but TO love each other better". Also, I saw another quote on your website that I really liked the font in (offc0064) the script one. Can I see that as another option?

Design Team:

That is another great font (you are picking some of my favorites!). Option 3d is Harman for the top font. Options 3d/3e have different glyphs on the script. Options 3f/3g are the script from "footprints on the moon" again with different glyphs. Option 3h is the same 2 fonts from the footprints quote. These are all great - good luck! 

Customer: 

Option d and f are my favorite. But let me run it by my husband.

Customer:

Okay, we definitely like the fonts from Option 3d now. And the "glyphs" from Option 3e. We are still not sure if the citation should be centered or to the right.

Design Team:

You are so close! I've attached a new proof with your font choices and your citation options. Then, here are some size options that can all work well in your space depending on how much height you have:

8.5" tall x 36" wide

9.75" tall x 42" wide

11.25" tall x 48" wide

Customer:

Option 5 it is! 

Design Team:

Awesome!! This is going to look so good. I just need to know what color you would like it in and your shipping address and I'll create a custom order for you.

Oh my! That is what I said when I opened an email from Misty wanting to create this awesome decal! This is a great message and you can read the whole story from Bryan here. We went through just a few proofs and size options and Misty had her custom decal in about a week.

It's hard to tell but this design is actually 44" tall x 48" wide - it makes a real impact and just begs to be read. And those pom poms are just too fun.

Seth sent us this photo of his home gym and I don't know about you, but I am super inspired to go workout! This quote can be used in so many settings: Office, school or classroom, any sports fan (this is a Jerry Rice quote), and now we can add gym. 

Seth got the 22" tall x 30" wide size in Burgundy. I love that it is a nice rich color and really adds some character to this space. Nice work Seth!

And one for a light wall. They both turned out wonderfully and look great.

This physical therapy logo combined with some standard vinyl quotes makes a great reception desk.

July 2017 Customer Photo Winner

Rachel contacted our Design Team with a request: She needed our Delighted You're Here Wall Quotes™ Decal, but she needed a custom size. So, we worked with her to get the size she needed (just 2.25" tall x 10" wide) and switched out the smaller font to something that would cut well at that size. We didn't know what she was working on, but when we got these photos we were blown away! 

When I contacted Rachel to find out what that beautiful blue color was called, she gave us some more details about her project: 

"The rockers came from Cracker Barrel. My husband got them for me when we moved into the house, and they were weathered to the point that he was ready to get rid of them. The seats were so rough they would actually grab your clothes when you sat in them.

So, I sanded them down, then primed and painted the seats and rocker parts with Behr's Exterior High Gloss in Black Mocha. (We had some left from painting the porch rail.)

The blue is DecoArt Americana Decor Chalky Finish Paint in Vintage. That worked awesome, because I didn't have to prime anything else on the chairs before using it.

After I got my fabulous decals from you guys, I put them on and covered all the chalk finish painted parts with varnish."
