Summer Lovin' Winners

Friends - summer's a rough time. I mean, its generally more relaxed pace is fantastic, and we've been doing great things like spending all our time outside (see photo above) but it also means I forget all kinds of important things - like announcing giveaway winners (eeps). So without further ado - here they are:

Because I have a Brother, I'll always have a friend goes to Rachel whose favorite thing about summer is when it ends. She lives in Phoenix, we totally understand.

The Eleanor Roosevelt Dream quote goes to Pam who loves to sit outside in the early morning and take in the sunshine without the rush. Ahhhh, yes.

Our Family is a circle of strength and love goes to Emily who loves the long warm days and lots of time spent outside.

Apparently, Diane's been oggling this inspirational wall quote design for quite some time. But good things come to those who wait, right?
And, in honor of paying off the last of her graduate student loans (wahooo!) she rewarded a job well done. She decided on Silver - which, I'm sure you'll agree is the perfect compliment against those rich navy walls.You can read more about her experience on her blog here (she was so excited she couldn't help but share - gotta love that, eh?).

My favorite line of the whole piece: "Essentially it was like applying a giant rub on tattoo but cooler and more permanent." Awe-Some.

Hazel Faye Boutique

Megan and the gang (mums and daughters) from Hazel Faye Boutique recently commissioned some custom vinyl lettering to adorn their shop. We created the boutique name of course, and then a lovely little note about the boutique's inspiration - Megan's grandma, Hazel Faye.

Apparently Grandma Hazel was quite the character (and made me think of my own spunky grandmother). She "was best described as a little 'sassy' and always entertaining." Fun, right? And what a great inspiration for a great little boutique.

And isn't their shop so neat? I love that their aim is to provide their customers with "unique and beautiful items that will help them create homes of comfort, warmth and tradition where enduring, joyful memories can be made" because really, that's what we're about too. I wish I could be there to browse around and pick out a treasure or two to take home.

You know about John and Sherry over at Young House Love, yes? Oh, we heart this little family a lot. I read them every day. In fact, I (far too) often say to my husband: "Well, John and Sherry did this" or "John and Sherry found that here" or something or other.

And there's Remodelaholic for great ideas for just about anything - for example, I recently sourced great tips for our St. Patrick's Day party and more inspiration for our new boys' room.

Sweet Dreams

We're in the process of fixing up and moving into our first home and I'm thinking a lot about the Master bedroom. We've lived in really tight spaces for so long and now that we have a lot more room to work with, I'm determined to keep it as clean and calm and uncluttered as possible (wish me luck!).

But I've also been thinking about what to put on our walls ('cause you know, that's what we do) and I've been sifting through some of our best customer photos featuring bedrooms and thought I'd share a few great ideas to steal/adapt for your own restful sleeping space.

You can always try one of headboards - super easy to apply and absolutely no footprint so if space is tight, but you still want a dramatic effect above the bed, try one of our vinyl headboards. There are several styles to choose from (monogram, modern, scroll, floral and wrought iron). You'll be glad you did.

And of course, one of our predesigned wall quotes always goes well over the bed. Choose a larger size (remember to consider the size of your mattress and shoot for 12"-18" smaller than that to achieve a nice eye-drawing focal point). Welcome Designs - Take II

Ok friends, I hear you. It was a perfect tie between #2 and #4. You want the symmetry from #2, I get it. You also love the font from #4. We can't just leave it at that, though so here are three more options for your review/approval.

All include the embellishment on either side (it seemed a pretty unanimous preference). We have one exactly the same, another with a slight change and a third completely different just to mix things up a bit.

Welcome Design Promotion

When we asked our Facebook fans a few weeks ago about what kind of discounts and promotions they/you would like to see, we were practilly overwhelmed with ideas! The most common request was for 50% off one item. Since we actually *can't* make that happen with our system (I know, bummer) we modified it to a $25.00 off any order over $50.00 instead and boy was that a hit!

The second most popular idea was for a free quote with your order and we thought this was an exceptional idea. Michelle (whose original idea it was) has been helping us with the design, but now we need more help - your help. Have a look at these options here and vote for your favorite (in the comments below).

I never thought TAXES could be fun

... but this design, commissioned for the conference room of a tax preparation company was a blast to create.

Now, I know you probably don't want this particular design on your wall. It's not exactly an inspiring reminder for the average citizen, but if you do have a neat idea you'd like to see made into a wall design - send us a note.

Alphabets in kids rooms, numbers in the nursery, letters in the office, fancy designs in the library - these work everywhere.

Did you know that the ampersand symbol is a ligature of the et (and) from the Latin? Not kidding. It was originally known as the phrase "and per se and", meaning "and [the symbol which] by itself [is] and". Whew, right?

Extra-Extra! We've just added two brand-spankin' new family wall quotes to our collection.

This new family wall decal is actually an oft-requested variation on another design we already have in our collection (Family #15) and we've been creating several custom layouts for it - this is one of our very favorites and now you can have it too!

And the final family wall quote of the collection (for now) is this whimsical custom family name design. I think it's sweet and it coordinates well with several other designs in the collection (like Family #4 - Welcome with the birds/nest).

This year, all the Christmas presents under our tree will be wrapped in red/white/silver. I'm a sucker for the color-coordination and really wanted the 'Christmas tree out of a magazine' kind of look, you know?

(Yes, my husband was reluctant... but it looks so nice, it's won him over - oh, and pardon the preponderence of bulbs there on the bottom right - what can I say? Our 3 yr old has a particular affinity for that particular branch).

However - there's been one (glaring) problem in my whole scheme: gift tags. I'd been scouring the internet and our local shops looking for classy gift tags and came up absolutely empty-handed. So, like any designer worth her salt, I made my own. And now - I'm passing on the goodness to you.

Rita ordered -and slightly modified- one of our kitchen wall quotes, but modified it to fit the space on the soffit in her kitchen. See how she trimmed off the embellishments from the top and applied them instead on either side of the quote?

Application Expiration Date

Technically - there's no expiration date on the vinyl. It's officially rated for 3-4 years of indoor use but I've seen several of ours up for at least that long (thanks, mom!) and they look as brilliant now as the day we installed them. The color is still nice and rich and the adhesive is true.

However - there is a bit of an expiration date on the transfer tape. Its adhesive tends to lose its integrity after it's been sitting for awhile (especially in the heat of the summer). And so, well enough to make for easy removal. For that reason, we recommend that you install your new wall quotes within 2-3 weeks of receiving them and honestly, the sooner the better.

If, for any reason it's been longer than our recommended time frame, there are a few tricks you can use to make the process go a bit more smoothly. First - be sure to put the lettering/desing facedown (I can't stress how important this is) on a firm surface. Then rub smoothly and firmly all over the with included application tool.

Start from the upper right hand corner, and working very slowly and at an angle, pull away the backing paper. Watch very closely to be sure the letters aren't pulling up with the backing paper - if they are, stop. Crease the backing paper in that spot as you press it back towards the transfer tape. This should release the letter so pull up again carefully. If no, take the edge of your fingernail and pick at the edge of the letter. This will release it and you can continue.

The trick is to go very very slowly so that you don't pull up and tear a letter. Yes - it's very time-consuming and can be frustrating. (See why we recommend the 2-3 week window?) But it'll be worth it in the end.

Let me share a great success story:

Emily ordered a fabulous custom quote with us almost a year ago. But she decided to wait to install it thinking that she wanted to change the wall color. She did just that and a couple weeks ago was finally ready to put up her new wall quote (probably because she's 8 months pregnant and nesting!). But she was having trouble; she wrote: "it doesn't seem to want to adhere to the transfer paper even after repeated vigorous rubbings with the included tool. Have I waited too long?"

The short answer was yes. I reviewed with her the tips I mentioned above and assured her that if it was still a huge problem, the letters tore or it was just too frustrating (which is sometimes the case), we'd be happy to help with a recut discount.

I was delighted to receive her follow-up a week later: "I emailed a few weeks ago asking if there was an 'expiration date' of sorts on the vinyl wall quotes and was a little disappointed to find out that in fact there was.

"But I just wanted to share because I figured out a way to get it up there with the minimum amount of frustration. I wound up cutting the large quote into somewhat irregularly shaped pieces, each piece containing one word."

"Before I cut it up I hung it on the wall when it was still whole and marked the top and corners with pieces of blue tape so I would have something level to go by."

"Then I just started with a piece in the corner and made my way across one row of text and then back across the next row. I pieced them together like a puzzle."

Isn't that a genius idea? And I'm so glad she sent photos to document the process.

"And yes, I'm 8.5 months pregnant and standing on the kitchen counter but sometimes you've gotta do what you've gotta do and this just had to get done! I couldn't bear to throw it away! Anyway, I hope this helps someone else who might struggle with the same issue. I know it won't work for every design but I feel like regardless of whether or not I was having trouble with the letters sticking it still would have been the easiest way to apply such a large quote."

I'm so proud of her (especially considering I'm also 8 months pregnant and this seems like an incredible feat to accomplish at this point). And maybe it'll help you - and at least inspire you to get the quote up on the wall as soon as possible (grin). Of course - if you have questions or trouble or concerns at all, please let us know; we're always happy to help and want to be sure you enjoy your new wall quotes.

Wall Quote Redesign

Remember this post about redesigning/customizing one of the wall quotes from our current collections? It's totally possible. In that case, we did the customizing (with plenty of feedback and review) but I'd like to show you another redesign submitted directly by a customer.

Our girls wall quotes collection is full of fun and funky designs for girls of all ages. This one - design #22 - is a particularly popular design. We love the collection of fun, powerful, full-of-character statements and the smattering of different font styles that really bring it to life.

We've seen it used in all kinds of settings - from nurseries and toddler and teen girl rooms to grown-up girl home offices and craft rooms, it shines everywhere (part of the reason it's also cross-listed in the inspirational wall quotes collection).

Recently, one very creative customer loved the quote but wanted to know about customizing the fonts and style to fit her slightly more polished decor. We thought it was a fantastic idea - custom projects really are our favorite jobs and we love to help you personalize our products to fit your style and personality.

Though we're (of course) happy to work with you on customization, as it turns out, this gal had the skills herself to make it happen exactly as she'd envisioned, took her design concept to the next level and submitted the vector artwork directly to us (fabulous idea, by the way). Voila:

Because she had already created the art, it was a cinch to make. She chose a nice big size for her space: 30" tall x 40" wide and decided on Latte and Persimmon for colors. The finished product came together beautifully.

What a great accent for this space, no? So if you have the skills to create your own design concept, by all means - send it on over. We've got the skills to make it into a real piece of art to add personality and class to your space.

Little Hedgehog Giveaway

Sarah from The Little Hedgehog blog (cute name and header, no?) is hosting a Belvedere Designs giveaway on her blog this week. We love how she used a foreign language wall quote to customize the breakfast nook in her Tuscan-themed kitchen.

Um, please excuse our recent absence(s). We've been away to Europe this summer (yes, it was fantastic) and taking care of most things remotely via the Internet (gosh we love the web). But we've been distracted too - by fantastic things like the Eiffel Tower in Paris and the Cliffs of Moher in Ireland and the Liverpool football game in England. It's been amazing. And we've got all kind of amazing ideas to incorporate into our expanding wall quotes and wall art collections.

All that said, we're now officially back on track, in the office and at full speed. You'll be seeing lots of neat posts this fall - we've got some neat ideas lined up to inspire you and lots of cool customer photo submissions (so creative!) to share.

Customize a Mantel

The mantel of a fireplace is definitely (definitely) the main focal point of the room and acts as a visual achor to bring all the elements of a room together. Details like architectural molding, crisp colors or warm wood tones, and a little something extra all contribute to make that visual anchor a fabulous detail of the room.

Check out this custom vinyl wall art piece we did recently. Even though it's small (about 2" tall x 36" wide), it stands out beautifully on that bright white molding around the fireplace and is an exceptional detail for this room's beautiful focal point.

What if I have to move? Part II

To recap: vinyl designs, wall quotes and vinyl wall art can all be very easily applied to a variety of move-friendly items. For example...

Example One: canvas. You can buy inexpensive stretched canvas frames at any local craft store. Paint them with a color that coordinates with your decor and apply the vinyl designs (like Jamie did in the photo below). Presto - instant fancy wall art that can move with you.

Example Two: picture frames or shadow boxes. Vinyl wall art sticks exceptionally well to glass and makes a beautiful framed piece in an empty frame, or include a piece of fancy scrapbook paper in the back of the frame and wahoo - uber fancy wall art that, you guessed it, can move with you. Also - this makes a spectacular gift (particularly for a wedding).

Example Three: painted boards. These are very popular and I'm sure you've see them all over. You can make your own for the most personalized look and, the best thing about it is that - wait for it - it can move with you. Or, just move it to a new spot in the house (kind of like rearranging furniture) for a new look somewhere else.

Example Three A: try something totally cool like this customer did and adhere the lettering to driftwood. Way-cool custom wall art and yep, it can move with you.

Example Four: beer mugs/coffee cups/glasses. My husband loves these (though I can't promise that every husband will feel the same... mine has a particular affinity for great design...) and breaks them out for all occasions. Glass of water, anyone? Mug of soda? How about we put hot chocolate in those babies? And guess what - those mugs can move with you.

We've used vinyl lettering on tiles and trays and mirrors and toy chests and canisters and crates and jars and binders and laptops and fridges (you usually move those with you, right?) and well, you get the idea. There are all kinds of possibilities. Have you applied your vinyl wall art to any move-friendly items lately? Care to share?

What if I have to move? Part I

Our vinyl wall quotes and designs are beautiful. No doubt about it. And if you've had one on your wall and love love love it - it'll make it that much harder to part with if you have to move (I know, I've been there). But there is good news.

First - the designs are easily removable (so renters, you can get your deposit back intact!). Just use your fingernail to get under the very edge and peel away. Sometimes it might help to warm the adhesive slightly with a blow dryer - this will make the peeling even easier. It shouldn't leave a residue and definitely will not hurt the paint or finish of the wall (or other surface). If there's just a bit of sticky left from the adhesive, just wipe it with a damp cloth and mild cleaner and you'll be set to go.

Second - the designs are quite affordable. So save your grocery money or put a little aside and you can get the same design for your new home - or splurge and get something entirely different. But watch out - there are so many great designs to choose from, it'll be hard to pick just one (you can always add one in every room...)

This girl's wall quote is a customer favorite. We've seen it in many colors used in many different places (bathrooms, playrooms, walk-in closets, above beds and dressers and cribs and bookcases). We've noticed that we get a lot of really great submissions using this 'Do something creative everyday 'quote. We don't particularly mean to highlight it, but really - the customers using it have super creative ideas (ha!). Interior Design Tip: Choosing a Focal Point

I love HGTV. (I mean really love it) One of my favorite things to watch for is how each designer chooses a focal point for the room and then builds the design, the look, the feel, the textures and colors and accessories of the entire room around that focal point.

Sometimes it's an architectural feature - like a fireplace or a huge window. Other times it's a picture, a mirror or a dramatic piece of furniture. But it's always something interesting to look at, something colorful or texturally and visually appealing.

The best, most inviting rooms have fabulous focal points. And you know - there are all kinds of great designs from our collections that work wonders as focal points in any room.

This design will set the tone in the bedroom - elegant, romantic, classy - a real retreat from the hectic day-to-day and a reminder of what, at the end of the day, is truly most important.

Have you seen the March discount? Trust me, you're gonna wanna.

I found this neat little tidbit in my wanderings today: If you're looking for tulips, find a bouquet with sturdy stems and dense flower heads that haven’t yet opened. And when you get them home, add a few shiny pennies to the bottom of the vase. The copper will help the stems to stay standing up straight. (neat fact, eh?)

This customer raves about vinyl on her appliances: "Wow, does decaling ever go on nice with stainless steel appliances. Just peels right off, real slick! And you can still clean over them with a damp cloth."

I just realized that we never did choose/announce a winner for January's customer photo submissions - and there were some fabulous ones. Wanna see how fabulous? Check these out.

Isn't this lovely? This gal customized our very popular Inspirational Wall Quote #2 (Dream with the Eleanor Roosevelt quote) to fit this - a favorite song of her mother's, recently deceased. What a lovely tribute, no?

I absolutely love this quote - I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Look for it as we update our nursery wall quotes section soon. It's gonna be fabulous (just like this custom design). Font used? Adorable.

Ah - one can never have too many reminders. Great use of our wall art collection (a chinese floral design here) and the ever-popular Passions Conflict font.

Frilly froo froo. Can't beat that. It's the perfect setting for a fairytale ending... (which is why you'll find this design in the girls wall quote section - of course!)

This is another quote we totally love. In fact, we liked it so much that we've added it to our updated boys wall quote section. This custom design uses the Goudy Handtooled and BeauRivage One fonts. And I love that wall color - so rich.

We got a lovely email from a *very* satisfied customer the other day and I couldn't wait to share. These custom vinyl letters turned out so well!

"I made the following sign for an antiques shop in Virginia, using your vinyl lettering on an old salvaged door. I was especially pleased that the vinyl adhered so well to a rough (chipped paint!) surface, and that it can be peeled off without defacing the surface. I also loved the fact the letters can be ordered in any color, and they weren't glossy, but a nicer satin finish... very classy-looking! The business owner was thrilled the results, and we love the finished look. So much easier, faster, and cheaper than hand-painting the letters, which was our only other option.

This is still one of our most popular nursery wall quotes. I know, we gave this one away just a bit ago, but it's so sweet, we can hardly resist spreading the love. This one is 12" x 21" in Blush (a lovely light fairy pink).

We've had all kinds of requests for religious wall quotes recently and most are custom-designed. There's so much inspiration in the Bible and we're glad to help you add a little of its peace and reverence to your home. We've worked with Jennifer at J. Leigh Designs before, so when she asked if we'd like to be a part of her Style Reviews, we said yes! She and another blogger friend have decided to team up and feature products they think have 'style.'

I know - we totally fit the bill - and were excited to participate. You can find her review and a nice photo walk-through tutorial of how to apply any of our wall quotes here on her blog.

She decided to use Family wall quote #15 (you can also find it under Love wall quote #7) as a focal point over the master bed. She has a free standing wall behind the bed; I think this turned out to be the perfect place for this quote.

One our new year's resolutions: host more giveaways.

Every so often there's a bit of a scrap we can't use or an order returned in exchange for antoher color or an extra wall quote made by accident. And so - instead of tossing such lovely things, we're going to give them away - to you. Wa-hoo, right?

This is the first in that series: our most popular nursery wall quote. You can find the same one cross-listed in both the Boys' wall quotes and Girls' wall quotes sections (we wanted to make it as available as possible). Turns out we had a bit of extra material today and so we added this to the docket.

It's in lavender, 8" tall x 14" wide. This design is inspired by Robert Munsch's much-loved children's book Love You Forever. If you don't know it, you should. It is a lovely story about a mother's unconditional and timeless love for her child.
